PILAR PARCERISAS, art critic for the Catalan newspaper “AVUI”, JORDI PLANA

Beyond jewelry and costume jewelry, Jordi Plana offers us inventions and artifacts that offer more than just a personal ornament. His jewelry stands as a sign of everyday luxury from new and unusual materials, born of urban and industrial culture. Soft and aggressive shapes, hard or soft materials are debated in highly dynamic compositions, where the jewelry retains its own autonomy as a desirable object beyond its decorative function. Rubber, silver, cork, stainless steel or foam are the materials that Jordi Plana manipulates to arrive at new, articulated compositional experiments, open to the participation and imaginative use of those who seek a different profile in personal jewelry. Jordi Plana explores the tension and malleability of materials, builds “collage-jewels” that are constituted in graphic signs, halfway between “graffiti” and assemblage” and ultimately proposes to us a decorative art that sensitizes touch, vision and that modifies the way personal objects are worn. When a concept of jewelry that transgresses the traditional subject-object relationship is imposed, without a doubt, Jordi Plana’s designs are offered as alternative possibilities, open to imaginative, playful and experiential use. His jewelry highlights the heritage of those avant-garde artistic movements that rose with the voice of rupture to propose simple and dynamic forms, such as constructivism, suprematism, or neoplasticism, which united under an artistic thought an integrative vision of the arts, design and decoration. Jordi Plana finally presents us with artistic forms of fleeting and ephemeral effects, unusual ornaments to achieve a new identity within the contemporary image.
